Know these cold
CompTIA Certification Path
- Recommended path: Tech+ (foundations) → A+ (technician) → Network+ (networking) → Security+ (security).
- A+ (220-1201 + 220-1202): two exams, covers hardware, OS, networking, security, and troubleshooting.
- Network+ (N10-009): one exam, covers networking fundamentals, protocols, security, and troubleshooting.
- Security+ (SY0-701): one exam, DoD-approved, covers threats, cryptography, identity, and architecture.
IT Career Roles
- Help Desk/IT Support: frontline troubleshooting for users; entry-level, A+ common requirement.
- Systems Administrator: manages servers, accounts, and infrastructure; often requires A+ + Network+.
- Network Engineer: designs and manages network infrastructure; Network+ and CCNA common.
- Security Analyst: monitors for threats and responds to incidents; Security+ and CySA+ common paths.
Professional Skills
- Active listening: let the user finish explaining before diagnosing; repeat back to confirm understanding.
- Clear documentation: write tickets with who, what, when, and steps to reproduce — not just 'it doesn't work'.
- Professionalism: timely responses, managing expectations, following up to confirm resolution.
- Time management: prioritize by impact (how many users affected) and urgency (is it blocking work?).
Documentation Standards
- IT documentation includes: network diagrams, runbooks (how to do X), knowledge base articles, asset inventory.
- Change management: document every change (what, why, when, who approved, rollback plan) before making it.
- Incident documentation: record timeline, symptoms, root cause, and resolution for each major incident.
- Password and secret management: use a password manager or secrets vault; never write passwords in plain text.
Quick check — before the quiz
1. Which CompTIA certification is considered the entry-level IT technician credential and typically requires two exams?
2. Which soft skill is most critical when a user calls the help desk frustrated about a problem?
Meerk's quiz — open the Lesson 5 gate
10 questions, no time limit. 85% on your first attempt in a 24-hour window opens the gate. Retakes inside the window are practice — they help you learn, they don't count. Work alone; the point is to know it, not to have seen it.
Stuck?

Dinner Table Question
Ask at home: Which IT career role interests you most and why — help desk, network engineer, or security analyst?
En español: ¿Qué rol de carrera en TI te interesa más y por qué — soporte técnico, ingeniero de redes o analista de seguridad?
